"The township of Nepean, of which Bytown was originally a part, was surveyed in 1798, A Mr. Honeywell was the first settler in the township. The owners of the original lots covering the present townsite were principally United Empire Loyalists or their children. That portion of the present city lying between Wellington and Rideau streets and the Ottawa River and stretching from Bronson Avenue to the Rideau river was originally granted to one Jacob Carman, the son of a United Empire
Loyalist who had settled in the township of Ameliasburg. It would not appear that Mr. Carman ever settled on the lot, and shortly afterwards in some way that I have been unable to ascertain, the property passed into the hands of Colonel Hugh Fraser, of Three Rivers, Quebec."

Jacob sold 100 acres of land on 4 Sept 1815 to Walter T Gates. The land was originally located in the Eastern District of the Province of Upper Canada but now is Cambria in Niagara County, New York.
"A memorial to be registered pursuant to the Statute in such ease made and provided of an Indenture of Bargain and sale between Jacob Carman late of the Township of Matilda in the Eastern District in the Province of Upper Canada but now a resent of the Town of Cambia in the County of Niagara in the State of New York yeoman and Walter T Gates of the Town of Johnstown in the District of Johnstown in the Province of Johnstown Upper Canada merchant dated the fourth day of September in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and fifteen Whereby the said Jacob Carman for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds of lawful money of Upper Canada to him in hand paid by the said Walter T. Gates and receipt there of acknowledge hath bargained sold remised released and forever claimed unto the said Walter T. Gates his heirs and assigns forever all and singular that certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and the Township of Matilda in the County of Dundas in the Eastern District and the Province of Upper Canada containing on hundred acres do the same more or less being composed of the West half of lot number thirty three in the first concession of the said Township of Matilda which said one hundred acres of land are builted and bounded or maybe otherwise know as follows that is to say commence as the entire of said lot number thirty three in front than North twenty four degrees West on hundred and five chains seventy six links more or less to the ? concession then south sixty six degrees West nine chains fifty links then south twenty four degrees east one hundred and five chains seventy six links more or less to the river St. Laurence then north sixty six degrees easterly along the banks of said river to the place of beginning together with all and singular the here a ditrament and appurtenances to the said premises in anywise belonging or there unto appertuning Which said indenture is witnessed by Alexander McMillan of the Town of Prescott in the District of Johnstown gentleman and Bates Cook of the Town of Cambria in the County of Niagara in the State of New York gentleman and the memorial hereof is here by required to be registered by Mr Walter T Gates the grantee therein named witness my hand and seal this twelfth day of October 1815

The Petition of Mrs. Clara Duqette who is of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, of the County of Wayne respectfully shews:
That Joseph Duquette late of Detroit in said County of Wayne departe this life in said City of Detroit on Saturday the 28th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty seven leaving a last Will and Testament, as your petitioner is informed and verily believes
That deceased was, at and immediately previous to his death, an inhabitant of said County of Wayne and the he was possessed of Real & Personal Estate, situate and being in the County of Wayne to be administrated, and that the estimated value thereof is the sum of two thousand dollars or thereabout as your petitioner is informed and verily believes.
And your petitioner further shews that the names and residence of the heirs at law of said deceased, and other persons interested in his estate, are as follows:
Your petitioner widow of deceased Residence Detroit Mich 62 Pine Street
Your petitioner therefore prays that all persons interested in said estate may be duly cited as required by law, and as to this Court may seem proper, that said Last Will & Testament may be admitted to Probate that adminisration of said estate may be granted to the executive in said Will named and that such other and further order and proceedings may be had in the premises as may be required by the statutes in such case made and provided.

Obituary:
After a long illness, Mrs. Barbara C. Otto, widow of the late Henry A. Otto, passed asway Sunday morning at 2 o'clock at her home, 247 Oakland Avenue. Mrs Otto was taken ill in February and had suffered long and patiently from a complication of diseases. The funeral will be hled from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Dr. J. R. J. Milligan officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Barbara C. Leonard was the youngest of seven daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Leonard. She was born in the township of Waterford April 28, 1840, and was married to Henry A. Otto November 29, 1860. To them were born six children, four of whom survive. Frank and Henry of Detroit and Mrs. Mabel Marsh and Mrs. Ray H. Newman, who made their home with their mother. A sister, Mrs. Catherine McCullough of Ypsilanti, also survives.

Aged Rush Man Take by Death
Abram Skutt, 85, Life Resident of County
Abram L. Skutt, 85, of Rush township, a life-long resident of Shiawassee County, died in his home at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday of complications of old age. For the past 10 years, Mr. Skutt has been an invalid and had been confined to a wheel chair most of that time. During the past week, his condition had been critical.
Services will he held from Knapp & Smith's Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with Rev. William Engle, of Carland, officiating. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Skutt was born in Middlebury township on April 15, 1855, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Skutt, Sr. At the age of 19 years, however, he moved into Rush township and had since lived in the farm home in which he died yesterday.
He was married on November 11, 1883, to Miss Katie C. White, who died in 1925.
Surviving are one son, Milo J. Skutt, who resides in his father's home; a daughter, Mrs. Ollie Crane, also of Rush township; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and on brother, L. W. Skutt, of Elsie.

Died:
87 years, 7 months, 26 days old at time of death.
