Military Service 17 Aug 1943 Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States enlisted Military Service Jun 1944 during WWII - Roger was a PVT, in Company I, 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division. He arrived in Europe on April 3, 1944.
The 83 Division landed at Omaha Beach around 19 June 1944. They had been lying offshore in the English Channel for almost a week due to rough weather. Conditions were terrible and many soldiers were seasick. The Division assembled near Bricqueville, Normandy. They moved west and arrived at Carentan on 26 June 1944 where they relieved the 101st Airborne. The 83rd Division left Carentan on 4 July and moved toward Sainteny. It should have been a short march of four miles but turned into six days of heavy fighting. They fought their way through swamps that were created by the Germans by flooding the fields. The 330th Infantry repelled repeated enemy counterattacks. Around 8 July, during heavy rains, they fought their way through the Hedgerows. There were heavy casualties and it was during this fight through the hedgerows that Roger probably lost his life on 8 July 1944.
