The Division assembled near Bricqueville, Normandy. They moved west and arrived at Carentan on 26 June 1944 where they relieved the 101st Airborne. The 83rd Division left Carentan on 4 July and moved toward Sainteny. It should have been a short march of four miles but turned into six days of heavy fighting. They fought their way through swamps that were created by the Germans by flooding the fields. The 330th Infantry repelled repeated enemy counterattacks. Around 8 July, during heavy rains, they fought their way through the Hedgerows.
