Mary Levert, 65, of Gregory, died June 9 at McPherson Hospital, Howell. She was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Carbon Hill, Ohio, the daughter of Howard and Blanch (Adams) Bateman. She married Paul Levert on Oct. 20, 1951, in Detroit. He survives. Mrs. Levert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pinckney.
Surviving relatives include husband Paul; one daughter, Betty Wood, of Canton; two sons, Bobby Levert Sr., Forestville, and Terry Levert, of Gregory; six grandchildren.
Funeral mass was June 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Kenneth Coughlin officiating. Burial was in St. Hedwig Cemetery, Dearborn. Funeral arrangements by Shelters Funeral Home, Pinckney.

It was found out from new arrivals from France that Pierre already had a wife, Marie Allaire, living in Poire-sur-Vie, in the Vendee, France. Pierre was accused of bigamy. He had confessed to neighbor Lauzon that he already had a wife in France but could not "live" with her because she was a witch. Pierre then disappeared. Lauzon told pastor Souart that Pierre "was met by the boat of the Sieur Le Ber, in which he went to the Ile de Sainte-Therese at Quebec, from where he left by wooden canoe to go join their ship before the fire in the presence of the Sieur Lambert Closse, a major in the area, to whom he admitted that he had left his wife in France because she had the reputation of being a witch".
