According to Journal records, when the Chicago and North Western Railroad was built from Marinette to Escanaba in 1872, the Nadeau Brothers Mill was awarded the contract to supply ties for the project. The Nadeau Brothers holdings included a company store and charcoal kilns. One of the charcoal kilns remains in that area. An advertisement in the 1912 Menominee County Atlas listed Nadea Brothers as dealers in lumber, lands, implements and general merchandise. | 11793 | ESCANABA WOMAN LOSES HER MOTHER Widow of the Late Barney Nadeau Dies of Old Age at Her Home in Nadeau - Was an Old Settler of Menominee County - Leaves Nine Children, One Living in Escanaba Mrs. Barney Nadeau, St., ages 75 years and mother of Mrs. John Gautier of this city, died Monday at her home at Nadeau, Mich. The funeral was held at ten o'clock this morning from St. Bruno's church, Nadeau, and was very largely attended. Mrs. Nadeau was one of the oldest and most prominent residents of Menominee county. She had been in poor health for some time and the cause of her death was general debility due to old age. Mrs. Nadeau was born in Belgium, April 14, 1836 and when a young girl moved with her parents to Wisconsin. She was married to the late Barney Nadeau in 1856. They moved to Menominee county in the year the Chicago & Northwestern railroad was built and took up a homestead at Nadeau. The deceased is survived by five sons and four daughters, also 36 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. | 11799 | Etienne and his brother-in-law, Pierre Vivien, were accused of raping Marie Chauvet (King's Daughter), spouse of Pierre Faye dit Villefagnan. The Souverign Council, in questioning witnesses, found that a history had existed between the accused and Marie. The Council stated "there was no violence on the part of said Vivien". Etienne, Pierre and Marie were all accused of adultery. Etienne and Pierre were sentenced to 8 days in prison and given only bread and water. They were both fined 28 livres; 15 to be paid the Pierre Faye, 10 to the Hotel-Dieu and 3 for court costs. They were released on 23 January after the fines were paid in full. | Roy, Etienne (I9189)
