    He was from the Saintonge d'Echillais (diocese of Saintes), Charente-Inferieure (district of Marennes) (Canton of Saint-Agnant), France. This is located near Rochefort.

    Legal Matter:
    Jean owed a debt to La Rochelle merchant Alexander Petit. Petit agreed to accept 303 livres "in good furs or cash" upon arrival of the first ship from Canada in the summer of 1675.

    Residence:
    Jean rented the house of Pierre Bouvier.

    Property:
    Jean purchased a piece of property "with the building which is above" on the Sault-au-Matelot. It had 16 feet in frontage. The price was 1000 livres. Jean signed the deed and Angelique initialed.

    Legal Matter:
    Pierre Bouvier asked to have Jean and family evicted for failure to pay his rent. Jean told the Sovereign Council that he was willing to pay except for some windows and frames that were damaged by thunder. Jean and family were evicted and still required to pay back rent.

    Apprenticeship:
    Jean agreed to take on 16 year old Joseph Mailloux as an apprentice. The agreement was that Jean would "show and instruct Joseph Mailloux in his trade as edge-tool maker" and furnish food, fire and light, "all clothing and footwear", and to treat him humanely during the three year apprenticeship.

    They lived in lower town but declared they had two cows and twelve arpents of land under cultivation.

    Apprenticeship:
    Jean Choret assigned his apprentice, Pierre Choret, to Jean. Gaultier was to pay 8 livres a month to Pierre and to clothe his "reasonably".

    Apprenticeship:
    Jean took as an apprentice, 15 year old, Pierre Tewey. Pierre would remain with Jean for four years.

    Legal Matter:
    During the unveiling celebration of the bust of Louis XIV in the Place Royale of the Lower Town of Quebec, Jean was playfully badgering merchant Henri Petit dit Bruneau with an old shotgun. The gun went off and mortally wounded Petit. Petit died 13 days later. Jean was convicted of murder by the Provost of Quebec. He was to be taken to the entry of the Cathedral, "to make honorable amends, head bared, a rope around his neck, and a burning torch in his hand". He would then be exiled from Quebec forever. Jean appealed to the Sovereign Council 10 days later. He pleaded "not guilty" and his sentence was commuted. He did have to pay the widow Petit 300 livres and 100 livres to the King.

    Notary Duquet drew up the contract which included a promised advance on Angelique's inheritance from her father.
