Durfee, Judge of Probate, in the matter of the estate of JOSEPH SWEENEY, deceased. On reading and filing the petition, duly verified, of Henry Valliere, the administrator of said estate, praying that he may be licensed to sell certain real estate of said deceased for the purpose of paying the debts of said estate and the charges of administrating said estate. It is ordered that the twelfth day of March next at ten o'clock in the forenoon, at said Probate Office, be appointed for bearing said petition, and that all persons interested in said estate appear before said Court, at said time and place, to show cause why a license should not be granted to said administrator to sell real estate as prayed for in said petition. That deceased was, at and immediately previous to his death, an inhabitant of said County of Wayne and the he was possessed of Real & Personal Estate, situate and being in the County of Wayne to be administrated, and that the estimated value thereof is the sum of two thousand dollars or thereabout as your petitioner is informed and verily believes.
And your petitioner further shews that the names and residence of the heirs at law of said deceased, and other persons interested in his estate, are as follows:

"In the matter of the application of Peter Leonard for naturalization. Appearing to the court that the applicant made his application for naturalization more than three years since in a court of record in the this county and that he has resided in the United States for five years and within the Territory of Michigan for the year last past and that he is of good moral character and well disposed to the good of the peace and happiness of the United States and attached to the Constitution of the same. The said applicant is admitted a citizen of the United States upon his taking the oath required in such cases. Whereupon the said applicant appeared in court and took and subscribed the following oath viz: I Peter Leonard do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States. And that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever and I do particularly renounce all allegiance and fidelity its defense to William Fourth King of Great Britain whose subject I have been."

Will:
Peter Leonard's will was made on 23 Feb 1837: Lavinia was given 1/3 of all real estate and personal property and had use of the other 2/3 for the purpose of maintaining his several children: Mary Leonard, Catherin Leonard, Almira Leonard, Betsey Leonard, Adelia Leonard, and one undelivered child (Clarissa).

Court:
Peter Leonard selected Henry Jones and Lavina Leonard as his executor of his estate. Both both refused to act. Court appointed administrators were Elisha Shelden, principal administrator, and Jacob Carman and Hiram Baxter.

"The township of Nepean, of which Bytown was originally a part, was surveyed in 1798, A Mr. Honeywell was the first settler in the township. The owners of the original lots covering the present townsite were principally United Empire Loyalists or their children. That portion of the present city lying between Wellington and Rideau streets and the Ottawa River and stretching from Bronson Avenue to the Rideau river was originally granted to one Jacob Carman, the son of a United Empire
Loyalist who had settled in the township of Ameliasburg. It would not appear that Mr. Carman ever settled on the lot, and shortly afterwards in some way that I have been unable to ascertain, the property passed into the hands of Colonel Hugh Fraser, of Three Rivers, Quebec."

In 1827, the Waterford area was part of Pontiac Township. Waterford Township was created int 1834. The citizens of the new township met on 6 April 1835 at the schoolhouse on Elizabeth Lake Road in District number 1. They elected officers for the township. Jacob Carman was chosen as a Director of the Poor and as a Inspector of Common Schools.
