    He was from the village of Illeville-sur-Montfort, in the present department of the Eure, in Normandy.

    Land:
    Pierre Gagnon gave Nicolas a half-arpent of frontal land which he detached from his own farm. Nicolas was to build a home in a year and work there by the fall. The document was drawn up by notary Audouart, at the home of Gagnon. Witnesses were Nicolas Verieul and Claude Auber.

    Jean Cauchon also made a gift of two arpents of frontal land by a league and a half deep, bordering the land received from Pierre Gagnon. Nicolas was to pay Cauchon, each year, 42 sols and 1 capon for rents and the cens owed to the seigneurs. He could not sell the land without permission from the owners.

    It appears that Nicolas had worked for Gagnon and Cauchon for more than two years and was given the land as an award for his good service.

    They owned one head of cattle and had 8 arpents of land under cultivation.

    Land:
    Nicolas sold back the half arpent of land to Pierre Gagnon for 100 livres in principal and 10 livres "for property and pins for the said wife". Gagnon left Nicolas part of the land where their house was built. This was the space between the nor of the royal road and the top of the first hill by a width of 5 perches, a half-arpent.

    Land:
    Nicolas obtained a concession of land, lot number 18, 4 arpents of frontal land by 42 deep. The College de Sainte-Anne was later built on this property.

    Land:
    Nicolas sold his property, which included a house, barn and 15 arpents of cleared land to Pierre Gagnon for 800 livres. Pierre paid 500 livres immediately. Nicolas was given the right to live "with his family and animals on the said homestead until the feast of pentecost of the next year". The document was signed before notary Becquet at the Seminary of Quebec.

    Nicolas and Marie signed the contract at the home of her Uncle Jean Cloutier before notary Claude Auber. Marie's father gave for her dowry, 150 livres, a wedding dress, linens, dishes and other utensils. For his mark, Nicolas made an X in the middle of a circle and Marie drew a heart or apple with a stem.
