    Noel was offered a contract by Abbot Pierre de Francheville, administrator of the Seminary to care for the Seminary properties at Baie Saint-Paul for 5 years. The contract would begin at Easter 1678 and continue until Easter 1683. Noel would care for 2 oxen, 6 cows, 2 sows and a male pig. He would maintain buildings, plow land, dig ditches and put up fences. Any profit or loss would be shared equally. Noel needed to make 1000 pine planks and would earn 27 livres per hundred and 30 livres for timber. "Half of the nets salt and barrels" would be provided for salmon fishing.

    Pierre Gibouin finally decided to return to France and wanted the payment for the 3 arpents of land he agreed to sell in 1667. Gibouin agreed to a price of 750 livres, half to be paid immediately. This transaction was recorded by notary Duquet.

    Notary Audouart drew up the marriage contract between Noel and Marie Madeleine Racine. Pierre Simard gave his son all his property, house, barn, animals and furniture. He would retain half of it for use during his lifetime. Noel agreed to lend his sister Suzanne 300 livres if she came "to live in this country". Etienne Racine gave 119 livres worth of gifts to Madeleine that included 18 minots of wheat, 2 oxen, a cow and various household goods. Pierre made his mark and Noel signed to contract.

    Governor Montmagny asked Etienne to be guardian for the minor children of the late Guillaume Hebert and Helene Desportes.

    Occupation:
    A service contract between Etienne and Guillaume Hubou was drawn up by notary Martial Piraube. It can be noted that Etienne received an above average education because of his signature on the contract.

    Residence:
    Etienne was asked by the Jesuits to join them at Saint-Marie-des-Hurons (Midland, Ontario). He returned to Quebec in 1645 but returned the following year. Daughter Marie-Madeleine was baptised there 25 July 1646. It was also noted on 29 August 1646 in the Journal of the Jesuits that Etienne had returned along with several others.

    Legal Matter:
    Governor Montmagny requested Etienne to visit the land of Jacques Maheust, located not too far from Cap-aux-Diamants. He was to verify the damage caused by the pigs. Etienne drew up the following report: "Today Twenty third Day of September gbi forty seven (1647) made a Visit by Estienne Racine To the cleared land of Jacques Maheusat by Order of Monsieur Le Governor Who Reported that he had The Value of two minots of peas damaged lost by the pigs of the farm of the homestead And Signed to be Used as thought Proper."

    Travel:
    Although not formally noted, Etienne traveled to France, probably at the request of Olivier Letardif. On 4 April 1648, Etienne, along with several other Canadian colonists, was witness to the marriage of Zachary Cloutier to Madeleine Esmard at Saint-Barthelemi.

    Land:
    Olivier Letardif ceded 12 arpents of frontage by 126 deep to Etienne. He would pay rents and cens on Saint Martin's Day. Etienne was to build a home during the same year and fence his land as it was cleared. The Riviere aux Chiens divided the land. Etienne also had hunting and fishing rights.

    Distribution of Property:
    Before notary Jacob the estate of Etienne Racine was divided amongst his heirs Noel, Francois, Pierre, Etienne Racine and brothers-in-law Jean Gagnon and Jean Pare. Six arpents and six perches were divided into eight pieces of unequal size. A young boy named Pierre Constant drew lots for the heirs. The house, two barns and stables were submitted to another drawing. Noel and Francois won the house and the other shared the remaining buildings.
